Requirements before you test
Delaware CDL test requirements
Commercial licensing is largely federal. Any figure above credited to a 49 CFR section applies in every state — see 49 CFR 383.135(a)(1) and 49 CFR 383.25(e). A figure credited to Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles is Delaware’s own, and may be stricter than the federal floor. Test length, fees, and scheduling are set by Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (official source).
Entry-Level Driver Training comes first
Since February 7, 2022, a new Class A or Class B CDL, a class upgrade, or a first passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials endorsement requires training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (49 CFR 380.600). Practice questions are study material and do not satisfy that requirement.
FMCSA Training Provider RegistryYou need a Delaware licence first
A commercial learner’s permit only counts if you already hold an ordinary licence from the same state (49 CFR 383.25(a)(2)). The Delaware non-commercial knowledge test runs 32 questions and needs 26 correct, with permits issued from age 16.

1. Federal cargo securement rules require the aggregate working load limit of tiedowns to be at least:
- AOne-quarter the cargo weight
- One-half the weight of the article or group secured
- CEqual to the cargo weight
- DTwice the cargo weight
Answer: One-half the weight of the article or group secured. The combined working load limit of the securement system must be at least one-half times the weight of what it holds.

2. Air-brake lag adds what to total stopping distance?
- ANothing at highway speed
- BThe vehicle's height
- The distance traveled while air moves through the system
- DOnly tire rotation
Answer: The distance traveled while air moves through the system. Air brakes take a short time to transmit pressure to the brakes. The vehicle continues moving during that lag.

3. A DANGEROUS placard for mixed non-bulk loads cannot replace a specific placard when:
- ACrossing a state line
- BThe trailer is empty
- Enough of one hazard class is aboard that a specific placard is required
- DDriving at night
Answer: Enough of one hazard class is aboard that a specific placard is required. Know table thresholds. When in doubt, ask your employer before rolling.

4. A bus must carry emergency equipment including a fire extinguisher and:
- ACargo tiedowns only
- BA spare fifth wheel
- Emergency reflectors (such as 3 triangles) or approved flares, and spare fuses unless circuit breakers are fitted
- DOnly a first-aid chart
Answer: Emergency reflectors (such as 3 triangles) or approved flares, and spare fuses unless circuit breakers are fitted. Reflective triangles or approved flares are required so you can warn traffic if you stop.

5. Before disconnecting the air lines while uncoupling, you should:
- Chock the trailer wheels or ensure its brakes are holding
- BRelease the fifth-wheel lock
- CDrain the trailer air tank
- DRaise the landing gear
Answer: Chock the trailer wheels or ensure its brakes are holding. Once the emergency line is disconnected the trailer relies on its spring brakes. Chocks stop it rolling if that pressure has bled away.
