Free Pennsylvania CDL practice test online
Take a free Pennsylvania CDL practice exam online with clear explanations—no sign-up. Coverage includes general knowledge, vehicle systems, combination vehicles, cargo, and endorsements. Then verify current requirements with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
CDL knowledge tests are federally regulated, so the passing score in Pennsylvania is the same as everywhere else: 80% correct on every knowledge test. You must also hold a commercial learner’s permit for 15 days before the skills test.

Requirements before you test
Pennsylvania CDL test requirements
Commercial licensing is largely federal. Any figure above credited to a 49 CFR section applies in every state — see 49 CFR 383.135(a)(1) and 49 CFR 383.25(e). A figure credited to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is Pennsylvania’s own, and may be stricter than the federal floor. Test length, fees, and scheduling are set by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (official source).
Entry-Level Driver Training comes first
Since February 7, 2022, a new Class A or Class B CDL, a class upgrade, or a first passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials endorsement requires training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (49 CFR 380.600). Practice questions are study material and do not satisfy that requirement.
FMCSA Training Provider RegistryYou need a Pennsylvania licence first
A commercial learner’s permit only counts if you already hold an ordinary licence from the same state (49 CFR 383.25(a)(2)). The Pennsylvania non-commercial knowledge test runs 18 questions and needs 15 correct, with permits issued from age 16.

1. After ordering an evacuation, the driver should:
- AOnly count from the driver’s seat
- BSend all students across the road alone
- CLeave immediately without checking seats
- Walk through the bus to ensure no students remain, retrieve emergency equipment, then account for everyone
Answer: Walk through the bus to ensure no students remain, retrieve emergency equipment, then account for everyone. Protect the scene with warning devices as needed and prepare information for responders.

2. Because of surge and high center of gravity, tank drivers must:
- Start, slow, stop, and turn very smoothly
- BUse only stab braking for every stop
- CIgnore posted ramp speeds
- DStart, slow, and stop as abruptly as possible
Answer: Start, slow, stop, and turn very smoothly. Smooth control limits surge. Keep steady brake pressure and do not release too soon when stopping.

3. The standee line on a bus marks:
- AThe emergency exit only
- BThe fare box queue
- CWhere baggage may be stacked
- Where standing riders must stay behind (no standing forward of the rear of the driver’s seat)
Answer: Where standing riders must stay behind (no standing forward of the rear of the driver’s seat). Buses that allow standing use a floor line or equivalent so riders do not block the driver.

4. In bad weather or on mountains, doubles and triples need extra caution because:
- AThey cannot use engine brakes
- BTire rules do not apply
- CThey are shorter than other CMVs
- They have greater length and more dead axles to pull, raising skid and traction risk
Answer: They have greater length and more dead axles to pull, raising skid and traction risk. More axles and length mean more chance for skids and loss of traction when conditions are poor.

5. In dual air systems at operating RPM, pressure should typically build from 85 to 100 psi within:
- A15 seconds
- 45 seconds
- C3 minutes
- D10 minutes
Answer: 45 seconds. If buildup is too slow, pressure may fall dangerously while driving. Check manufacturer specs for larger tanks.
