Requirements before you test
South Dakota CDL test requirements
Commercial licensing is largely federal. Any figure above credited to a 49 CFR section applies in every state — see 49 CFR 383.135(a)(1) and 49 CFR 383.25(e). A figure credited to South Dakota Driver Licensing is South Dakota’s own, and may be stricter than the federal floor. Test length, fees, and scheduling are set by South Dakota Driver Licensing (official source).
Entry-Level Driver Training comes first
Since February 7, 2022, a new Class A or Class B CDL, a class upgrade, or a first passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials endorsement requires training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (49 CFR 380.600). Practice questions are study material and do not satisfy that requirement.
FMCSA Training Provider RegistryYou need a South Dakota licence first
A commercial learner’s permit only counts if you already hold an ordinary licence from the same state (49 CFR 383.25(a)(2)). The South Dakota non-commercial knowledge test runs 25 questions and needs 20 correct, with permits issued from age 14.

1. Before moving after loading or unloading students, you must check:
- All mirrors, including crossover mirrors, so the danger zone is clear
- BOnly the interior rearview mirror
- CNo mirrors if the stop arm is extended
- DOnly the left outside mirror once
Answer: All mirrors, including crossover mirrors, so the danger zone is clear. Count students and account for everyone before the bus rolls.

2. High crosswinds are especially dangerous for doubles and triples when the trailers are:
- ACarrying liquid
- BCoupled to a heavy tractor
- CFully loaded
- Empty or lightly loaded
Answer: Empty or lightly loaded. A light trailer has little weight resisting the wind, so gusts can push it sideways or tip it. Slow down or stop in severe wind.

3. If a school bus is stalled on or adjacent to a railroad-highway crossing, the driver must:
- AKeep students on the bus and wait for the train
- Evacuate the bus
- CMove students onto the tracks away from traffic
- DOnly call dispatch and remain seated
Answer: Evacuate the bus. A stalled bus on the crossing is a mandatory evacuation situation.

4. When you pull off the road and stop, turn on:
- Four-way emergency flashers
- BOnly the left turn signal
- CNo lights if taillights work
- DHigh beams aimed at traffic
Answer: Four-way emergency flashers. Drivers have crashed into parked vehicles they thought were still moving, especially at night.

5. Driving much faster than surrounding traffic generally:
- AReduces crash risk
- Increases passing and fatigue, raising crash risk
- CIs required on interstates
- DImproves fuel economy always
Answer: Increases passing and fatigue, raising crash risk. Constantly passing is tiring and multiplies conflict points. Going with the flow is safer when conditions allow.
