These differ from the rules that hold nationally — they are the ones that catch out drivers who studied another state’s handbook.
1. When a Mississippi school bus has flashing red lights and/or an extended stop sign, you must come to a complete stop at least:
- A30 feet away
- B50 feet away
- C5 feet away
- 10 feet away
Answer: 10 feet away. The Mississippi Driver’s Manual requires a complete stop at least ten feet away from the bus, remaining stopped until children have crossed and the bus resumes motion with lights off and stop sign retracted.

2. On a Mississippi divided highway with four or more lanes, a driver traveling in the opposite direction from a stopped school bus:
- AMust stop only at night
- BMust always stop
- May continue without stopping
- DMust slow to 10 mph only
Answer: May continue without stopping. The Mississippi Driver’s Manual states that if you are traveling in the opposite direction as the stopped school bus on a divided highway with four or more lanes, you may continue to travel on your side without stopping.

Answer: The area may be a large blind spot. Large vehicles have substantial blind areas along both sides and behind. Pass efficiently and do not cut closely in front.

2. A large truck ahead of you swings left before turning right. You should:
- Stay back and never move into the gap on its right
- BSound your horn to correct the driver
- CMove alongside its left door
- DPass on the right side while there is room
Answer: Stay back and never move into the gap on its right. Long vehicles must swing wide to clear the corner. The gap on the right is where the trailer will sweep through.

3. An orange triangle with a red border on the back of a vehicle means it:
- AIs a school vehicle
- BHas an oversize load
- CIs carrying hazardous materials
- Travels well below normal traffic speed
Answer: Travels well below normal traffic speed. The slow-moving vehicle emblem marks farm equipment and similar vehicles. Closing speed is much higher than it appears.
